Conversational AI chatbots will now be offered to the nearly 200,000 aspiring college students who have utilized Common App to apply to colleges and universities in the United States. A recently announced partnership between AdmitHub, Common App, and College Advising Corps aims to help students navigate the enrollment process and begin classes in the fall.

AdmitHub’s chatbot service will be provided to Common App users free of charge so that every student has easy access to the right information. Friendly chatbot “Oli” will send weekly text messages guiding students through steps like filling out the FAFSA, applying for scholarships, finding COVID-19 support resources, and deciding where to go to college. These text messages will provide regular reminders as well as real-time assistance. If a student needs help with something, they can ask Oli the chatbot, which is programmed to identify their question and send the proper response, all via text. If a student wants further guidance from a human, Oli will get them in contact with College Advising Corps, an organization that provides one-on-one coaching to students.

“Even in the best of times, the complexity of the enrollment process can lock out the students who stand to gain the most from higher education,” said Eric Waldo, Executive Director of Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher Initiative and Vice President for Access & Equity at Common App. “We’re thrilled to partner with AdmitHub and College Advising Corps to leverage technology and great counseling to tear down those barriers – and ensure that in the midst of this crisis, students have the resources they need to attend and succeed in college.”

In “normal” years, as many as 40% of students who enroll in a college don’t make it to the first day of class. This phenomenon, called “summer melt,” affects lower-income and first-generation students at a higher rate. The COVID-19 pandemic, which is disproportionately impacting these populations, puts these students at even greater risk of “melting.” AdmitHub, Common App, and College Advising Corps know the value of higher education and are committed to helping students of all backgrounds in this trying time.

AdmitHub is proud to stand with Common App and College Advising Corps to help all students complete the enrollment processes, attend their college of choice in the Fall, and achieve an education.
